Maypole Villa is ideally situated for exploring the Apokronas region, and is an excellent base for touring the Western half of Crete.
The village of Kokkino Chorio (made famous by the film Zorba the Greek) is just a 5 minute walk away. You will find a tavern and a mini market that stocks most things. On the edge of the village is the popular Glass Factory, where you can watch glass being blown, and pick up some unusual items at reasonable prices.
The villa is just 10 minutes drive to Almirida's blue flag beach with its many tavernas. Here you can hire windsurfers, catamarans, canoes and bicycles.
Just off the road to Chania, you will find the ancient ruins of Aptera - these include Ancient Greek, Roman and Venetian. Some of the buildings are quite spectacular, and the added bonus is that the site is free to visit.
Chania itself has a beautiful Venetian harbour where you can relax in one of the many tavernas facing the water's edge. The Maritime Museum is worth a visit, as is Leather Alley and the indoor market.
